- • 30cm printed cotton fabric (bag)
• 30cm printed cotton fabric (lining)
• 30cm x 70cm piece of lightweight clear plastic
• 35cm x 10mm grosgrain ribbon or tape
• 35cm dress zipper
• sewing machine
• matching Gütermann thread
• scissors
• tape measure/ruler
• pins
• iron - Step 1
- Cutting
From each printed fabric cut 2 pieces 35cm long x 27cm high, matching patterned fabric where needed. Cut 2 pieces of lightweight clear plastic 35cm x 26cm. - Step 2
- Outer bag
Loop ribbon and pin raw edges of ribbon to the right front edge of one of the pieces of bag fabric, 4cm down from top edge. Make sure ribbon loop is facing inwards and not caught up in any seams when sewing.
With right sides together, place other fabric piece on top matching edges. Pin and sew sides and bottom edges together using a 1.5cm seam allowance. Clip corners and press seams open. Mitre the bottom inside corners to 5cm. Turn right side out and press seams. Press under 1cm along top raw edges. - Step 3
- Lining
Place the two pieces of clear plastic on the right side of one piece of lining fabric aligning bottom and side edges. The top edge of fabric should be 1cm taller than the plastic.
Place the other piece of lining fabric right side down on top of the plastic (wrong side facing up). Pin all layers together, and sew side and bottom edges together using a 1.5cm seam allowance. Clip corners and finger press seams open.
Mitre the bottom inside corners to 5cm. Press in 1cm along top edge of fabric, careful not to iron plastic. - Step 4
- Zipper
Place lining inside body of bag with wrong sides of fabric together. Pin the two folded fabric top edges together. Sew zipper in place, sewing all layers of fabric and plastic within the sewing.
- Handy Hint
- Use a different print for each family member. These would be great for the kids to use for school swimming classes.
