• template plastic
• sandpaper board
• quilters pencil
• sewing machine with ¼” foot and walking foot
Step 1
Note: Make a sandpaper board by attaching a sheet of sandpaper to a wooden placemat using double-sided tape along all edges.

TEMPLATE
Cut a template 6½” x 6½” square from the template plastic or clear acetate.

This includes a ¼” seam allowance.
Step 2
CUTTING
• Place a single layer of tree fabric (A) on the sandpaper board and use template to ‘fussy cut’ 12 x 6½” squares.
To ‘fussy cut’ position the template over the section of fabric you wish to have in the square, use a quilters pencil to trace around the edge then cut out the square.
• Place a single layer of owl fabric (B) on the sandpaper board and use template to ‘fussy cut’ 9 x 6½” squares.

All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated.
• From the ivory floral fabric (C) cut 2 x 6½” strips, crosscut into 8 x 6½” squares.
• From the pink blender fabric (D) cut 2 x 6½” strips, crosscut into 7 x 6½” squares.
• From the aqua blender fabric (E) cut 1 x 6½” strip, crosscut into 6 x 6½” squares.
• From brown floral (F) cut 4 x 2” strips for border 1.
• From plum ditsy (G) cut 6 x 2¼” strips for border 2.
• From multi stripe fabric (H) cut 5 x 2½” strips for binding.
Step 3
QUILT TOP

1. Randomly select a 6½” square of fabric C, D or E and sew to the right-hand side of each tree square making sure that trees are right way up.

Similarly select a 6½” square of fabric C, D or E and sew to the left-hand side of each owl square again making sure owls are right way up.

2. Arrange the ‘tree units’ into 4 rows with 3 units in each row, leaving a space between each row as these form rows 1, 3, 5 and 7.

Do not join units together yet.

3. Arrange the ‘owl units’ into 3 rows with 3 units in each row.

These form rows 2, 4 and 6 so insert between the tree rows but again do not join units yet.

4. Stand back and look at your layout and if necessary make any adjustments.

When happy with the layout sew the units in each row together pressing the seam allowance in alternate rows in the opposite direction.

This will enable seams to butt together when joining the rows.

5. Sew the rows together pressing seam allowances in one direction.
Step 4
BORDERS

Border 1 -
Remove selvedges from brown floral 2” border strips.
Sew one strip to each side of the quilt.
Press seams towards border and trim off any excess fabric.
Sew remaining strips to the top and bottom of the quilt, press and trim off any excess fabric.

Border 2 -
Cut two plum ditsy border 2 strips in half and sew one half to each of the other four plum ditsy border strips.
Sew one strip to each side of the quilt.
Press seams towards border and trim off any excess fabric.
Sew remaining strips to the top and bottom of the quilt, press and trim off any excess fabric.
Step 5
QUILT ING
Layer backing, batting and quilt top together and baste.

Using the variegated Gutermann Sulky cotton 30 thread, quilt in the ditch and diagonally over fabrics C, D and E (see diagram below) or as desired.
Step 6
FINISHING
Join the 2½” multi stripe binding strips to make one long strip.
Press in half lengthwise and bind mitering corners.

Attach a label or sign and date your quilt.
Note
All fabrics should be 100% cotton, washed & pressed.

¼” seam allowance used throughout unless otherwise indicated.

Read all instructions carefully before commencing the quilt.

    • Grrr I REALLY wanted to make this quilt, and my local Spotlight has sold out of the main owl fabric. Does anyone know where I can get some?
