CUTTING
All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated.
• From fabric A (olive birds) cut:
One 6½" strip, crosscut into 5 x 6½" squares.
Eight 4½" strips for the outer border.
• From fabric B (olive tiny vine) cut:.
Two 3½" strips, crosscut into 20 x 3½" squares.
Eight 1½" strips for the inner borders.
Seven 2½" strips for the binding.
• From fabric C (cream leaf) cut:
Two 7½" strips, crosscut into 10 x 7½" squares.
Two 9-7/8" strips, crosscut into 8 x 9-7/8" squares.
Four 3½" strips, crosscut into four 3½" x 6½" strips and 40 x 3½" squares.
• From fabric D (gold rose spray) cut:
Two 7½" strips, crosscut into 10 x 7½" squares.
Two 9-7/8" strips, crosscut into 8 x 9-7/8" squares.
Two 3½" strips, crosscut into eight 3½" x 6½" strips and 8 x 3½" squares.
• From fabric E (choc/olive ombre vine) cut:
Three 6½" strips, crosscut into 16 x 6½" squares.
Two 6-7/8" strips, crosscut into 10 x 6-7/8" squares.
Five 3½" strips, crosscut into 4 x 3½" squares and twenty-four 3½" x 6½" strips.
• From fabric F (cream tiny vine) cut:
Two 6-7/8" strips, crosscut into 10 x 6-7/8" squares.
• From fabric G (choc wild roses) cut:
Three 6½" strips, crosscut into 16 x 6½" squares. - Step 1
- Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of one 9-7/8" fabric C square and place right sides together, with a 9-7/8" fabric D square. Sew a ¼" away from the marked line on both sides (diagram 1). Cut apart on the marked line to make two half-square triangle units (diagram 2). Press seams toward the fabric D triangles (diagram 3). Repeat to make a total of 16 x 9½" C/D half-square triangle units.

- Step 2
- Place a 6½" fabric E square on the fabric C corner of one C/D half-square triangle unit (diagram 4). Sew across the diagonal of the smaller square from the upper right to lower left corner. Flip open the triangle formed and press. Trim the excess fabric leaving a ¼" seam allowance. This ‘flip and sew’ technique is used throughout the pattern.
- Step 3
- Place one 6½" fabric G square on the fabric D corner of the C/D half-square triangle unit (diagram 5). Sew across the diagonal of the smaller square from the upper right to lower left corner. Flip open the triangle formed and press. Trim the excess fabric leaving a ¼" seam allowance. This creates a Block A corner.
- Step 4
- Repeat Steps 2-3 to make sixteen 9½" Block A corners. Refer to Block A layout to sew together 4 corner units to make one 18½" Block A square. Repeat to make 4 x 18½" A blocks in total.

- Step 5
- Repeat Step 1 using 10 x 6-7/8" fabric E squares and 10 x 6-7/8" fabric F squares to make 20 x 6½" E/F half-square triangle units for Block B corners (diagram 6).

- Step 6
- Repeat Step 1 with using 10 x 7½" fabric C and 10 x 7½" fabric D squares to make 20 x C/D half-square triangles. Trim all the C/D half-square triangle units to measure 6-7/8" square.
- Step 7
- Place one C/D half-square triangle unit from Step 7 on top of another C/D half-square triangle unit, right sides together. Make sure the centre seam is going in the same direction on both units and the fabric C triangle in the top block is opposite from the fabric C in the bottom block.
- Step 8
- Draw a diagonal line across the top half-square triangle unit so that it goes across the sewn seam. Sew ¼" away from both sides of the drawn line (diagram 6). Cut on the drawn line to make two quarter-square triangle units (diagram 7). Repeat to make 20 x 6½" quarter-square triangle units for Block B.
- Step 9
- To make one Block B centre, use the flip and sew technique from Step 2 and follow the seam direction in diagram 8 to sew one 3½" fabric B square on each corner of one 6½" fabric A square to make one block centre. Repeat to make 5 Block B centres.
- Step 10
- Refer to Block B layout to make 5 x 18½" B blocks.
- Step 11
- QUILT TOP
Arrange the blocks in 3 rows of 3 blocks each, alternating Blocks A and B as shown in quilt top layout. Sew the blocks in each row together; press the seams in each in the opposite direction to row before. Sew the rows together; press the seams in one direction.
- Step 12
- To make the pieced border, refer to flip and sew technique from Step 2 and follow flying geese layouts in diagram 9 to make required number of each using the assorted 3½" squares and 3½" x 6½" strips.
- Step 13
- To make the pieced border, refer to flip and sew technique from Step 2 and follow flying geese layouts in diagram 9 to make required number of each using the assorted 3½" squares and 3½" x 6½" strips.
- Step 14
- Trim selvages from the 1½” fabric B strips. Sew the strips together end to end in pairs. Cut 2 x 60½” and 2 x 62½” lengths (if your measurements are different, cut to fit your quilt top). Sew the shorter lengths to the sides of the quilt top then the longer lengths to the top and bottom for the inner border.
- Step 15
- Trim selvages from the 4½” fabric A strips. Sew the strips together end to end in pairs. Cut 2 x 70½” and 2 x 72½” lengths (if your measurements are different, cut to fit your quilt top). Sew the shorter lengths to the right and left sides of the quilt top then the longer lengths to the top and bottom to complete the quilt top.
- Step 16
- Layer the completed quilt top with batting and backing and quilt as desired. Bind the finished quilt using the 2½” fabric B strips. Attach a label or sign and date your quilt.
