- • Fabric for patch pieces – you’ll need enough for 8 - 6.5 cm x 13 cm (2 ½” x 5") pieces
• Fabric for bottom front – you’ll need 38 cm x 21 cm (15" x 8")
• Fabric for back – you’ll need 38cm x 41cm (15” x 16”)
• Fusible interfacing – mid to heavy weight
(If you don’t want your placemat to be stiff, use a wadding or flannel instead of interfacing)
• Thread
• Rotary cutter or scissors - Step 1
- Cut 8 - 6.5 cm x 13 cm (2 ½” x 5") pieces to create the patchwork piece
Cut 1 - 38 cm x 21 cm (15" x 8") piece for bottom of front
Cut 1 – 38cm x 41cm (15” x 16”) interfacing
Cut 1 – 38cm x 41cm (15” x 16”) piece for the back side
NOTE: Press interfacing to back piece fabric BEFORE cutting and cut as one piece
- Step 2
- Create the patchwork piece for the top of your placemat. With right sides together and using a 1cm seam allowance, sew the pieces together. Press the seams open.

- Step 3
- With right sides together sew the bottom front piece to the top patchwork piece using a 1cm seam allowance. Press the seam towards the bottom front piece.

- Step 4
- With the right sides together pin the front of the placemat to the back of the placemat leaving a 10-15cm gap so you can turn the placemat right side out.

- Step 5
- Once you have turned the placemat right side out top stitch around the edge with a 1cm seam allowance. This will ensure that the gap you left unstitched will be sewn closed properly.
