Household objects - tape & old magazines - generate new ideas.
Final Result
Materials
• clear packing tape
• photocopy or laser printed sheet of small images
• 13cm x 20cm sheet of patterned cardstock
• 3.5cm x 13cm sheet of cream cardstock
• 3cm x 13cm sheet of contrasting cardstock
• 20cm twill tape
• 3 large eyelets
• 3 circular metal tags
• 30cm string
• black felt tip pen
• distress inks in Vintage Photo & Black Soot
• decorative scissors
• burnishing tool
• paper adhesive
• dimensional adhesive
• fabric glue
• paper trimmer
• scissors
• circle paper punch (optional)
• small hole punch
• eyelet setter
Step 1
Cut out the images leaving a little space around each of them. Place images printed side down on the sticky side of the clear packing tape. Use a burnishing tool to burnish the images onto the tape to get a good seal all around and over the images.
Step 2
Place tape on a waterproof surface paper side up. Wet the paper and use the ball of your index finger to rub away the paper. Continue to wet the paper and rub gently but firmly until the paper is gone. It may take a few minutes to do this. Allow the tape to dry. If paper fibres are still visible, wet the image again and rub a little longer until they are all gone and you end up with a transparent image on the tape.
Step 3
Remove inserts from metal ring tags. If you have the right size circle punch, punch images from the packing tape using scrap cardstock as a backing to support the tape as you punch it. If circle punch is too small, punch a cardstock circle to use as a guide for cutting circle shapes the right size from your packing tape. Place the image face down inside the back of the ring and fix in place with a small amount of dimensional adhesive.
Step 4
Punch holes in the twill tape 4cm apart. Set eyelets into the twill tape using large eyelet setter.
Step 5
Trim cardstock for the card 13cm x 20 cm and fold in half. Cut along the bottom edge of the contrasting cardstock using decorative scissors and adhere 1.5 cm up from bottom front edge of card. Ink edges of cream cardstock and adhere over the top of contrasting cardstock. Cut string into three pieces and loop through holes in twill tape. Adhere twill tape to front of card using fabric glue. Punch small holes in top of transparencies inside metal rings and loop one piece of string through each tag and knot to finish.
Step 6
Handwrite the words Bon Voyage or a similar greeting onto the cream cardstock.
Handy Hint
To use your own images print these onto regular copy paper using a laser printer or make a copy of a sheet of images using a colour laser photocopier (inkjet images don’t work). Packing tape transfers can be done using images from most magazines - test each magazine’s paper quality first to ensure it works.
