4 (4-5) x 50g balls 1st Colour (C1)
4 (4-5) x 50g balls 2nd Colour (C2)
Solid Cardigan

Needles
A pair each 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) and 4.00mm (US 6), (UK 8)
Knitting Needles or sizes that give correct tension/gauge.
MATERIALS
3 Stitch Holders; A Yarn Needle; 6 (6-7) Buttons. - Step 1
- Back
Using 4.00mm (US 6), (UK 8) Needles and C1, cast on 63 (69-73) sts.
1st row (RS) - K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to last st, K1.
2nd row - K1, * P1, K1, rep from * to end.
Rep 1st and 2nd rows for rib 11 times = 24 rows rib in total.
Change to 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Needles.
Beg stripe patt - Do not break off yarn after completing each
stripe, instead carry colour not in use loosely up side of work until
required again.
Using C2, 1st row (RS) - Knit.
2nd row - Purl.
Using C1, 3rd row - Knit.
Using C2, 4th row - Purl.
5th row - Knit.
Using C1, 6th row - Purl.
Rows 1 to 6 incl form stripe patt.
Cont in patt until work measures 23 (26-28) cms/9 (10½-11) ins
from beg, ending with a purl row.
Shape armholes - Keeping stripe patt correct, cast/bind off 3
(4-4) sts at beg of next 2 rows = 57 (61-65) sts.
Dec one st at each end of next row, then in every foll alt row until
51 (55-59) sts rem.
Cont in stripe patt without shaping until armhole measures 15
(16-18) cms/6 (6½-7) ins, ending with a purl row.
Shape shoulders - Cast/bind off 7 (8-8) sts at beg of next 2
rows, then 7 (7-8) sts at beg of foll 2 rows.
Leave rem 23 (25-27) sts on a stitch holder. - Step 2
- Left Front
Using 4.00mm (US 6), (UK 8) Needles and C1, cast on 37 (39-41) sts.
Work 23 rows rib as for lower band of Back.
24th row - Rib 5, leave these 5 sts on a stitch holder for left
front band, rib to end, dec one st in centre = 31 (33-35) sts.
Change to 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Needles.
Beg stripe patt - Work in stripe patt as for back until work
measures same as back to beg of armhole shaping, ending with
same stripe patt row.
Shape armhole - Keeping stripe patt correct, cast/bind off 3
(4-4) sts at beg of next row = 28 (29-31) sts.
Dec one st at armhole edge in every foll alt row until 25 (26-28) sts rem.
Cont in stripe patt without shaping until armhole measures 9
(9-10) cms/3 1/2 (3 1/2-4) ins, ending with a purl row.
Work 1 row.
Shape neck - Next row (WS) - Cast/bind off 6 sts, purl to end = 19 (20-22) sts.
Dec one st at neck edge in next row, then in every foll alt row
until 14 (15-16) sts rem.
Cont in stripe patt without shaping until armhole measures
same as back to beg of shoulder shaping, ending with same
stripe patt row.
Shape shoulder - Cast/bind off 7 (8-8) sts at beg of next row.
Work 1 row. Cast/bind off rem 7 (7-8) sts. - Step 3
- Right Front
Using 4.00mm (US 6), (UK 8) Needles and C1, cast on 37 (39-41) sts.
Work 4 rows rib as for lower band of Back.
5th row - Rib 2, yrn to make a st, rib 2tog, rib to end = buttonhole.
Work 15 rows rib.
21st row - As 5th row.
Work 2 rows rib.
24th row - Rib to last 5 sts, dec one st in centre, turn, leave
rem 5 sts on a stitch holder for right front band = 31 (33-35) sts.
Change to 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Needles.
Beg stripe patt - Work in stripe patt as for back until work
measures same as back to beg of armhole shaping, ending with
same stripe patt row.
Work 1 row.
Shape armhole - Keeping stripe patt correct, cast/bind off 3 (4-4) sts at beg of next row = 28 (29-31) sts.
Dec one st at armhole edge in next row, then in every foll alt row until 25 (26-28) sts rem.
Cont in stripe patt without shaping until armhole measures 9 (9-10) cms/3 1/2 (3 1/2-4) ins, ending with a purl row.
Shape neck - Next row (RS) - Cast/bind off 6 sts, knit to end = 19 (20-22) sts.
Dec one st at neck edge in every foll alt row until 14 (15-16) sts rem.
Cont in stripe patt without shaping until armhole measures same as back to beg of shoulder shaping, ending with same stripe patt row.
Shape shoulder - Complete as for left front shoulder. - Step 4
- Sleeve (make 2)
Using 4.00mm (US 6), (UK 8) Needles and C1, cast on 33 (35-37) sts.
Work 24 rows rib as for lower band of Back.
Change to 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Needles.
Beg stripe patt - Work in stripe patt as for Back, at the same
time inc one st at each end of 5th row, then in every foll 6th (8th-10th) row until there are 47 (49-51) sts.
Cont in stripe patt without shaping until work measures approx 28 (33-38) cms/11 (13-15) ins from beg, ending with same stripe patt row as for back to beg of armhole shaping.
Shape top - Keeping stripe patt correct, cast/bind off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows = 43 (45-47) sts.
Dec one st at each end of next row, then in every foll alt row until 23 (23-19) sts rem, then in every row until 9 sts rem.
Cast/bind off loosely. - Step 5
- Left Front Band
With RS facing, using 4.00mm (US 6), (UK 8) Needles and C1, rib across 5 sts from left front stitch holder.
Work 55 (63-71) rows rib.
Leave sts on a stitch holder. Break off yarn. - Step 6
- Right Front Band
With WS facing, using 4.00mm (US 6), (UK 8) Needles and C1, rib across 5 sts from right front stitch holder.
Work 12 (14-12) rows rib.
Next row - Rib 2, yrn to make a st, rib 2tog, rib 1 = buttonhole.
Work 15 (17-15) rows rib.
Rep last 16 (18-16) rows 1 (1-2) time/s, then buttonhole row once.
Work 12 (14-12) rows rib.
Leave sts on needle. Do not break off yarn. - Step 7
- Neckband
Using yarn needle and mattress st seam, join shoulder seams.
With RS facing and holding 4.00mm (US 6), (UK 8) Needle with right front band sts and using C1, knit up 22 (24-24) sts evenly along right front neck, knit across sts from back stitch holder, knit up 22 (24-24) sts evenly along left front neck, then rib across sts from left front band stitch holder = 77 (83-85) sts.
Work 7 rows rib as for back, beg with a 2nd row and working a buttonhole (as before) in foll 4th row (as before) = 6 (6-7) buttonholes in total.
Cast/bind off loosely in rib. - Step 8
- FINISHING
DO NOT PRESS. Using yarn needle, darn in ends. Using yarn needle and mattress st seam, join side and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves. Using a flat seam, sew rem of front bands in position.
Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes. - Step 9
- Solid Cardigan
Work as for Stripe Cardigan, working in one colour only throughout. - Note

19 sts and 25 rows to 10 cms/4 ins over stocking st, using 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Knitting Needles.
