Christmas stockings

Materials

• stocking panel of choice
• 2m x 90cm iron-on pellon (fusible batting)
• cotton fabric for lining
• 30cm ribbon for hanging
• optional - binding for top edge
• matching Gütermann thread
• pins
• scissors
• sewing machine
• iron
• optional embellishments - sequins, sequin shapes, seed beads, decorative threads, hot-fix crystals & applicator

Step 1

Cut
Cut out stocking front and back from the panel cutting carefully along the outer edges of each piece. Use a stocking front and back as a pattern to cut 2 lining pieces and 2 iron-on pellon pieces.

Step 2

Fuse
Trim 6mm (1/4”) off the top of each iron-on pellon stocking piece. Place stocking front and back, wrong side up and pin one pellon stocking to each, adhesive side down, so that the pellon piece is lined up with the lower stocking edges so the top 6mm (1/4”) of stocking fabric does not have pellon. Turn pieces over and using the iron fuse the pellon to wrong side of the stockings.

Step 3

Decorate
Quilt and hand sew any embellishments such as sequins and seed beads on now but do not apply hot-fix crystals.

Step 4

Sew
Place stocking front and back right sides together and stitch around all sides except across the top. Repeat for the lining pieces leaving 20cm unstitched across the bottom. Fold ribbon in half and pin so that the raw edges line up with the top edge of the stocking. The loop will point down the straight edge of the stocking. Pin ribbon in place. Place stocking inside lining so right sides are together and pin along top edge. Stitch together along the top edge, turn right side out through the opening in the lining and press. Stitch opening in lining closed. Place lining into stocking, press top edge and topstitch around 5mm from the edge. To anchor lining, hand stitch to stocking in a few places.

Step 5

Alternative - sew
Place stocking front and back right sides together and stitch around all sides except across the top. Repeat for the lining pieces. Fold ribbon in half and pin so that the raw edges line up with the top edge of the stocking. The loop will point down the straight edge of the stocking. Pin ribbon in place. Place lining inside stocking so wrong sides are together and pin. Stitch together around the top 5mm from the edge then bind. To anchor lining, hand stitch to stocking in a few places.

Step 6

Sparkle
Embellish with hot-fix crystals as desired.
