Christmas star quilt

Quilting for Christmas is a precious tradition. Make this for your own home or present it as a gift that will truly be treasured.
Final Result
Materials
• 0.7m Christmas fabric A - stars
• 0.7m Christmas fabric B - stars
• 1m Christmas fabric C - stars & inner border
• 1.7m Christmas fabric D - stars & outer border
• 1.5m Christmas fabric E - stars & binding
• 2.5m - Christmas fabric - background
• 2m x 250cm wide backing fabric
• 2m x 250cm wide batting
• matching Gutermann 100% cotton thread
• rotary cutter, mat and quilters rulers
• quilting pins, tape measure
• scissors, seam ripper
• tailors pencil
• hand needle
• sewing machine with 1/4” foot and walking foot

All fabrics should be 100% cotton, washed & pressed. 1/4” seam allowance used throughout unless otherwise indicated. Read all instructions carefully before commencing the quilt.
Step 1
Cutting
All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated.

From each of fabrics A, B, C, D & E cut:
• 1 x 6 1/2” strip, crosscut into
5 x 6½” squares
• 4 x 3 1/2” strips, crosscut into
40 x 3 1/2” squares

From fabric C cut -
• 6 x 1 1/2” strips, join together to make one long strip

From fabric D cut -
• 8 x 5” strips, join together to make one long strip

From fabric E cut -
• 8 x 2 1/4” strips, join together for the binding

From background fabric cut -
• 10 x 6 1/2” strips, crosscut into 56 x 6 1/2” squares
• 6 x 3 1/2” strips, crosscut into 36, 3 1/2” x 6 1/2” rectangles
• 1 x 3 1/2” strip, crosscut into
4 x 3 1/2” squares
Step 2
Instructions
Using tailor’s pencil draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of 3 1/2” squares of fabrics A, B, C, D & E.

Work out the order in which you want the stars. The stars are made in rows rather than separate blocks.
Step 3
Row 1 & 11
Using the 3 1/2” x 6 1/2” background rectangles and 3 1/2” squares of fabrics A, B, C, D & E make one Flying Geese unit in each colour.

Flying Geese unit - Place a 3 1/2” square on one end of a 3 1/2” x 6 1/2” rectangle, right sides facing, matching the corners and stitch along the diagonal line. Trim to a 1/4” seam allowance and press.

Repeat with another square of same colour on the other end of the rectangle. Sew flying geese units together using 3 1/2” x 6 1/2” rectangles between.

Sew a 3 1/2” background square to each end of strip, press.
Step 4
Row 2, 4, 6, 8 & 10
Using 6 1/2” background squares sew 3 1/2” squares of fabrics A, B, C, D & E make four connector squares.

Connector squares - Place a 3 1/2” square on one corner of a 6 1/2” square, right sides facing, matching the corners and stitch along the diagonal line. Trim to a 1/4” seam allowance and press.

Repeat with another square on the other 3 corners. Sew connector squares together using 6 1/2” squares of fabrics A, B, C, D & E between, making sure the fabrics match the previous row.

Make two Flying Geese blocks and sew to each end of row, press.
Step 5
Row 3, 5, 7 & 9
Make 5 connector squares and sew together using 6 1/2” squares of background fabric.

Sew a 3 1/2” x 6 1/2” background rectangle to each end of row, press. Sew all rows together and press.
Step 6
Inner border (fabric C)
Cut 2 x 60 1/2” strips and sew onto opposite sides of quilt, press.

Cut 2 x 62 1/2” strips sew onto remaining opposite sides and press.
Step 7
Outer border (fabric D)
Cut 2 x 62 1/2” strips sew onto opposite sides of quilt, press.

Cut 2 x 71 1/2” strips sew onto remaining opposite sides and press.
Step 8
Finishing
Layer backing, batting and quilt top, baste together. Quilt in the ditch or as desired.

Bind using strips put aside (fabric E) for binding and attach a label.
