A pair 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Knitting Needles or size that gives correct tension/gauge.
MATERIALS
A Cable Needle; A Yarn Needle; 5 Stitch Holders and 1 Button for Sweater. - Step 1
- Sweater
Back
Using 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Needles, cast on 70 (76-82-88) sts.
Beg rib - 1st row (RS) - K1, * P2, K1, rep from * to end.
2nd row - P1, * K2, P1, rep from * to end.
Rep 1st and 2nd rows twice = 6 rows rib in total.
Beg patt - 1st row (RS) - K1, (P2, K1) 7 (8-9-10) times, P2,
(K4, P2) 4 times, (K1, P2) 7 (8-9-10) times, K1.
2nd row - P1, (K2, P1) 7 (8-9-10) times, K2, (P4, K2) 4 times,
(P1, K2) 7 (8-9-10) times, P1.
3rd row - K1, (P2, K1) 7 (8-9-10) times, P2, (C4L, P2) 4 times,
(K1, P2) 7 (8-9-10) times, K1.
4th row - As 2nd row.
Rep 1st and 2nd rows once.
Last 6 rows form patt.
Cont in patt until work measures 16 (18-19-23) cms/6½ (7-7½-
9) ins from beg, working last row on WS.
Shape raglan armholes - Keeping patt correct, cast/bind off 2
sts at beg of next 2 rows = 66 (72-78-84) sts. **
Dec one st at each end of next row, then in every foll alt row until
46 (48-50-54) sts rem.
Work 1 row patt.
Divide for back opening - Next row - Patt 2tog, patt 21 (22-
23-25), turn.
Cont on these 22 (23-24-26) sts and dec one st at raglan edge in
every foll alt row until 18 (18-20-23) sts rem, then in every row
until 13 (15-15-16) sts rem. Leave rem sts on a stitch holder.
With RS facing, join yarn to rem sts and patt to last 2 sts, patt 2tog.
Complete to correspond with other side. - Step 2
- Front
Work as for Back to **.
Dec one st at each end of next row, then in every foll alt row until
46 (50-52-58) sts rem.
Work 1 row patt.
Shape neck - Next row - Patt 2tog, patt 14 (16-17-20), turn.
*** Cont on these 15 (17-18-21) sts.
Dec one st at raglan edge in every foll alt row 4 (6-5-5) times,
then in every row 5 (3-5-7) times, at the same time dec one st
at neck edge in every foll alt row 4 (6-6-7) times = 2 sts.
Next row - Patt 2tog. Fasten off. ***
Slip next 14 sts onto a stitch holder and leave.
With RS facing, join yarn to rem sts and patt to last 2 sts, patt 2tog.
Rep from *** to ***. - Step 3
- Sleeve (make 2)
Using 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Needles, cast on 40 (40-40-46) sts.
Beg rib - Work 6 rows rib as for lower band of Back.
Beg patt - 1st row (RS) - K1, (P2, K1) 4 (4-4-5) times, P2,
(K4, P2) twice, (K1, P2) 4 (4-4-5) times, K1.
2nd row - P1, (K2, P1) 4 (4-4-5) times, K2, (P4, K2) twice, (P1,
K2) 4 (4-4-5) times, P1.
3rd row - K1, (P2, K1) 4 (4-4-5) times, P2, (C4L, P2) twice,
(K1, P2) 4 (4-4-5) times, K1.
4th row - As 2nd row.
Rep 1st and 2nd rows once.
Last 6 rows form patt (noting that sts will be inc).
Cont in patt and working extra sts into rib, inc one st at each
end of next row, then in every foll 4th row until there are 52
(56-58-66) sts.
Cont in patt without shaping until work measures 16 (19-21-23)
cms/6½ (7½-8½-9) ins from beg, working last row on WS.
Shape raglan - Keeping patt correct, cast/bind off 2 sts at beg
of next 2 rows = 48 (52-54-62) sts.
Dec one st at each end of next row, then in every foll alt row
until 16 (16-12-24) sts rem, then in every row until 10 sts rem.
Leave rem 10 sts on a stitch holder. - Step 4
- Neckband
Using yarn needle and mattress st seam, join raglan seams,
noting that tops of sleeves form part of neckline. With right side
facing and using 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Needles, patt across
sts from left back stitch holder thus - P1, (K1, P2) 4 (4-4-5)
times, (K2tog) 0 (1-1-0) time/s, patt across sts from left sleeve
stitch holder thus - (P2tog, P1) 0 (1-1-0) time/s, K1, (P2, K1) 3
(2-2-3) times, knit up 12 (12-12-15) sts evenly along left side
of neck, patt across sts from front stitch holder thus - P2, (K1,
P2) 4 times, knit up 12 (12-12-15) sts evenly along right side
of neck, patt across sts from right sleeve stitch holder thus - K1,
(P2, K1) 3 (2-2-3) times, (P1, P2tog) 0 (1-1-0) time/s, then
patt across sts from right back stitch holder thus - (K2tog) 0 (1-
1-0) time/s, (P2, K1) 4 (4-4-5) times, P1 = 84 (84-84-96) sts.
1st row (WS) - K1, P1, * K2, P1, rep from * to last st, K1.
2nd row - P1, K1, * P2, K1, rep from * to last st, P1.
Rep 1st and 2nd rows once, then 1st row once = 5 rows rib in
total. Cast/bind off loosely in rib. - Step 5
- Hat
Using 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Needles, cast on 104 (110-116-
116) sts.
1st row (RS) - P2, * K1, P2, rep from * to end.
2nd row - K2, * P1, K2, rep from * to end.
Rep 1st and 2nd rows twice = 6 rows rib in total.
Beg patt - 1st row (RS) - P2, * K4, P2, rep from * to end.
2nd row - K2, * P4, K2, rep from * to end.
3rd row - P2, * C4L, P2, rep from * to end.
4th row - As 2nd row.
Rep 1st and 2nd rows once.
Last 6 rows form patt.
Cont in patt until work measures approx 12 (12-15-15) cms/5
(5-6-6) ins from beg, ending with a 4th patt row.
Shape crown - Next row - P2tog, * K4, P2tog, rep from * to
end = 86 (91-96-96) sts.
Next row - K1, * P4, K1, rep from * to end.
Next row - P1, * K1, K2tog, K1, P1, rep from * to end = 69
(73-77-77) sts.
Next row - K1, * P3, K1, rep from * to end.
Next row - P1, * K3tog, P1, rep from * to end = 35 (37-39-39) sts.
Next row - P1, * P2tog rep from * to end = 18 (19-20-20) sts.
Break off yarn leaving a long end. Run end through rem sts,
draw up tightly and fasten off securely. - Step 6
- FINISHING
DO NOT PRESS. Using yarn needle, darn in ends.
Sweater - Using yarn needle and mattress st seam, join side
and sleeve seams. With RS facing and using 4.50mm (US 7),
(UK 7) Needles, knit up 20 sts evenly around back opening.
Next row - K3, yfwd, K2tog, knit to end.
Cast/bind off loosely knitways. Sew on button to correspond with
buttonhole.
Hat - Using yarn needle and mattress st seam, join side edges
together to form centre back seam. Make a pom pon and attach
to top of hat as pictured. - Note

26 sts and 27 rows to 10 cms/4 ins over rib (see Back of Sweater), using 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Knitting Needles.
