- • 50cm African Market Ladies
• 40cm African Market Basket
• 30cm African Market Poles
• 50cm African Market Geometric
• Turquoise for backing
• 20cm black homespun
• 65cm x 55cm batting
• Gütermann black cotton thread
• Rotary cutter, mat and quilters rulers
• Quilting pins, tape measure
• Scissors, seam ripper
• Hand needle
• Sewing machine with ¼” foot and walking foot - Step 1
- Cutting
note: The panels with the ladies and the baskets are fussy cut to showcase the fabric at its best.
• From the African market ladies cut two vertical panels, one 6½” x 12” for the top right-hand side and one 5¼” x 12” for the left-hand side. Cut a horizontal panel 6½” wide x 6” for the centre bottom panel.
• From African market baskets cut one vertical panel 2¾” x 12”
• From African market poles cut 2 x 2¼” strips across the width of fabric for the binding.
For the right-hand bottom panel cut one 4½” wide x 6” piece with the poles running vertically. Again with the poles running vertically cut a 3½” wide x 6” piece for the left-hand side.
• From the black homespun cut 2 x 1½” strips and 2 x 1” strips across the width of fabric. - Step 2
- Quilt top
Arrange the panels as shown in diagram. From the 1” black homespun strips cut 2 x 12” lengths and stitch one to each side of the top centre panel. Press seams towards the sashing (strips) the stitch the market ladies panels to the sides of the sashing.
From the 1” black homespun strips cut 2 x 6” lengths and stitch one to each side of the bottom centre panel. Press seams towards the sashing (strips) then stitch the market poles panels to each side of the sashing.
From the 1” black homespun strips cut 1 x 14½” length and stitch to bottom of the top section. Press seams towards the sashing then stitch the bottom section to the other side of the sashing. 
- Step 3
- Borders
From the 1½” black homespun strips cut 2 x 18” lengths and 2 x 16½” lengths. Stitch the 18” lengths to each long side of the quilt top. Press seams towards border. Stitch the remaining two lengths to the top and bottom edges. - Step 4
- Finishing
Layer backing, batting and quilt top, baste together. Quilt in the ditch and bind. Sign and date your quilt or attach a label to the back. - Note
- All fabrics should be 100% cotton, washed & pressed. ¼” seam allowance used throughout unless otherwise indicated. Read all instructions carefully before commencing the quilt.
