The simplest sewing skills can get you started on creating useful and pretty accessories for yourself or loved ones.

Materials
• 33cm x 43cm cotton fabric - Michael Miller ‘Licorice Dots’
• 33cm x 28cm cotton fabric - white/black dot
• 32cm x 28cm cotton fabric - green/white dot
• 17cm x 28cm cotton fabric - white/green dot
• 17cm x 28cm cotton fabric - pink/white dot
• 20cm pink zipper
• 75cm x 9mm grosgrain ribbon
• Gutermann black sewing thread
• scissors
• pins
• ruler/tape measure
• iron
• sewing machine
Step 1
Fold 32cm x 28cm green/white dot fabric in half to measure 16cm x 28cm. Press on fold and topstitch 3mm from folded edge. Press flat.
Step 2
Fold the 17cm x 28cm white/green dot fabric in half to measure 8.5cm x 28cm. Press on fold and topstitch 3mm from fold edge. Press flat.
Step 3
Place green dot fabric on top of white/black dot fabric, matching raw edges on the left side edge. Then place white/green dot fabric on top of green/white dot fabric also matching raw left side edges. Pin together.
Step 4
From licorice dot fabric cut a trip 8cm wide by 28cm, centre over a row of 5 circles high with 15mm seam allowance all around. Press under 15mm on both long sides.
Step 5
Press pink/white dot fabric in half to measure 8.5cm x 28cm. Place circle fabric piece on top of pink dot piece right sides together, matching pressed folds.
Step 6
Sew together down 4cm from the top edge. Then another 4cm length from bottom edge up, leaving the centre open. Turn right side out and press flat. Pin zipper under the opening in the centre and sew each side to the zipper.
Step 7
Place on top of white/black dot fabric matching the right raw edges. Pin in place. Topstitch left-hand side of circle piece to white black dot fabric 3mm from left edge of circle fabric.
Step 8
Cut a 33cm x 28cm rectangle from the licorice dots fabric, centre over dots to create a grid of 6 x 5 dots with 15mm seam allowance around all edges.
Step 9
Place on top of the other pieces right sides together. Pin and sew together using a 15mm seam allowance leaving the right short side edges open. Trim seams and clip corners, turn right side out. Press flat. Press inside the seam allowances of the open end.
Step 10
Fold grosgrain ribbon in half and insert the folded end 1cm into open seam and pin in the middle. Topstitch around all edges, 3mm from edge, securing open fabric end and ribbon. Press flat.
Handy Hint
It is safest to keep your jewellery in your carry-on luggage.
