- Materials
- • felting needle
• foam block
• Merino rovings - white, red, black, blue, orange - Step 1
- Pick up a little of the white merino roving, tease out some fibres then lay them on the foam block in a crisscross fashion to make the finished shape stronger. Pick up the felting needle and push the needle into the fibres in a straight up and down action. Lift the matted fibres and move them on the foam after every few stabs so the fibres don’t become imbedded in the foam.
- Step 2
- Put the felting needle down, pick up the fibres and roll in the palm of your hand to start creating a ball shape. Keep alternating between needling the fibres and rolling them in your hands until the ball is the right size and firmness. Make 2 or 3 white balls and attach them to each other to form the body of the snowman, by pushing the felting needle through both balls until the fibres matt together.
- Step 3
- Roll a few fibres of black between your fingers to form a small ball and needle this onto snowman to form a button; make two more for buttons and six for the face to form the mouth and both eyes. Roll a few fibres of orange to form a small cone and needle onto the face for the nose. Needle some red or blue fibres around the neck for a scarf. Roll some fibres of black for a hat sized ball and needle this onto top of the head to form a hat.
- Handy Hint
- Don’t twist the felting needle as you push it into the fibres or it will snap as the hardened steel is brittle.
