Crochet capelet
By Spotlight
- Crochet continues its new millenium make-over with cheeky little ‘glitz’ designs like this.
- Final Result

- Materials
- • 5 x 50g balls ‘Moda Vera’ Wisp
• 8.00mm crochet hook
• stitch marker to identify beginning of round
• scissors & yarn needle - Step 1
- Foundation row:
Make 55ch, make 4ch, join with sl st to 1st chain to form ring.
Rnd 1: 1dc in same st as sl st, 4 ch, miss 4 ch, (1 dc in next ch, 4ch, miss 4 ch) rep until back to 1st dc (11 x 1 dc + 4-ch loops). Place marker in the next dc to identify the start of the rnd.
Rnd 2: 1dc in the 1st dc, 1dc in 4-ch loop, 4ch, (1dc in next dc, 1dc in 4-ch loop, 4ch) rep to end of rnd.
Rnd 3: 1dc in ea of next 2 dc, 1dc in 4-ch loop, 4ch, (1dc in ea of next 2 dc, 1dc in 4-ch loop, 4ch) rep to end of rnd.
Rnd 4: 1dc in ea of next 3 dc, 1dc in 4-ch loop, 4ch, (1dc in ea of next 3 dc, 1dc in 4-ch loop, 4ch) rep to end of rnd.
Rep increasing as established in pattern until there are 12 dc in a row at the top of ea the triangle in the round, ending with 1dc in 4-ch loop at the last triangle (11 x 10dc triangles + 4-ch loops). - Step 2
- Decreasing:
(4ch, 1dc in 4-ch loop, 4ch, miss 1 dc, 1dc in ea of next 9 dc) rep until end of rnd.
Note: This time you are ending on the last triangle of the round not beginning on the first.
Next rnd: (4ch, 1dc in 4-ch loop, 4ch, 1dc in next 4-ch loop, 4ch, miss 1 dc, 1dc in ea of next 8 dc) rep until end of rnd.
Rep as established in pattern: increasing the number of 4-ch
loops by 1 and decreasing the number of dc by 1 in ea rnd until there is only 1 dc in the peak of ea diamond shape.
Final rnd: Work (4ch and 1dc in ea 4-ch loop until you reach the last loop before the tip of the diamond, 1dc into that 4-ch loop, 1dc in the next 4-ch loop) rep to the last loop before the 1st diamond again, 1dc in that loop, 4ch, sl st into sp between 2 dc. Fasten off. - Step 3
- Neck:
Work 1 row of 1dc in ea dc, and 3dc ea 4-ch sp, then work another row of dc in each dc of the last rnd, sl st to 1st dc.
Fasten off and sew in all loose ends. - Step 4
- To embellish the bottom edge, work a rnd of shell (1tr,1ch,1tr,1ch,1tr) in ea dc, anchoring them with 1dc in the
next 4-ch loop. If desired work a rnd of 1dc, 1ch, in ea 1-ch loop to finish off. - Abbreviation
- ch = chain
sp = space
sl st = slipstitch
Rnd = round
dc =double crochet
tr = treble
rep = repeat
ea = each - Note
- This poncho is worked in a continuous spiral, each round working into the next without a break. It is advisable to use a stitch marker to help you remember where each round begins and ends.
- Handy Hint
- Great for those cooler evenings, this versatile, easy fitting capelet can be worn off the shoulder or as a poncho. Wisp with its touch of lurex adds just the sparkle needed for this weekend project.
