Yes, you do have to sew the two edges of the sole together. The seam runs the length of the centre of the foot and up the ankle. When I cast off, before I thread the yarn through the last stitch to fasten off, I measure twice the length of the seam plus a little bit more (maybe another two or 3 centimetres) of the yarn and then cut it and thread it through the last stitch. That way I already have the yarn attached to sew it up with.
Also, once I have threaded the ribbon through the holes and tied it, I do 4 or 5 stitches (like for sewing on a button) through the back seam and the ribbon. That way, if the ribbon should come undone, you don't lose it from the bootie.
Most of the knitting you see shown by me has been given as gifts to friends and family. There always seems to be SOMEONE having a baby.
