Science Writer and academic Margaret Wertheim (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Wertheim) [en.wikipedia.org] has used the womanly art of crochet to solve an age old problem in an area of mathematics called hyperbolic geometry,
notoriously difficult to model, by using crochet.
Yes crochet. http://crochetcoralreef.org/ [crochetcoralreef.org]
You can even crochet a model of a coral reef. The underlying
mathematics of how a coral reef can be modelled work so well using
crochet that it can be pretty hard to see the difference in pictures.
Here's an exhibition they had at the Powerhouse Museum a couple of years

Just shows we girls deserve to stand up and be counted for the complexity of our creativity.
