From Michelle Yeo:
• Join an in-store class that also offers discounts on fabrics.
• Form or join sewing groups so ideas, books and fabrics can be shared.
• Buy the right tool for the right job. For instance you only use a 24” x 6.5” ruler for borders. I suggest buying a 12” x 6.5” one.
• Don’t compromise on quality fabrics. It’s often easier to use. When in doubt get advice from your teacher before purchasing fabrics.
• Buy second hand quilting books.
• Beware of pre-cut fat quarters. Do your maths. Sometimes a flat rate for quarters is charged; more expensive than the original individual fabrics.
• Ask for gift vouchers for your favourite fabric stores at birthday and Christmas time.
• Consider hand quilting versus machine; it takes longer.
• Only get special quilts machine quilted. With others just use continuous design which is cheaper.
